A Toyota Echo ready for recycling
This Toyota Echo was full of mould. The owner decided it was time to scrap it, and Jay picked it up for recycling.
Why does a long-parked vehicle need a different plan?
A car that drove into its parking spot last week usually rolls when the brake is released. A vehicle that has stood for a long time often does not. Brake pads can bond to rotors, especially through damp winters. Tires slowly lose pressure and can flatten completely or crack. A battery that has been dead for months will not power the steering lock or the shifter on many modern vehicles. Any of these turns a simple pickup into a recovery.
None of this rules a vehicle out. It just means the team needs to know about it before arriving, so they bring suitable equipment and allow enough time. A vehicle that is planned for as a recovery is a routine job. The same vehicle treated as a quick roll-on pickup can mean a wasted trip for everyone. That is why Jay will ask how long it has been parked, whether it has been started recently and whether you know if it rolls.
What should I tell Jay about access and condition?
Describe where the vehicle sits and what surrounds it. Is it nose-in or backed in? Is there a fence, a hedge, a wall or another vehicle close to either side? Is the surface paved, gravel or grass that may be soft after rain? Are any tires completely flat, and do you know whether the parking brake has been left on? If the keys are lost, say so. If it is under a cover, mention it. Photos sent by text are very helpful when the position is awkward, though they are not required.
Overhead clearance and the approach also matter. A low carport roof, tree branches or a narrow gap between buildings can affect how the vehicle is pulled out. You do not need to measure anything precisely. A plain description is enough for the team to judge whether a standard recovery will work or whether something more needs to be arranged and discussed before booking.
How is a recovery carried out in shared parking?
Many long-parked vehicles sit in shared spaces: a strata lot, a lane behind several homes or a driveway that other people use every day. In those cases we plan the timing as carefully as the equipment. Let Jay know who else needs to use the space and when it is usually quiet. If neighbours' vehicles may need to be moved temporarily, it is best to arrange that before the pickup window so the team is not waiting on keys. Shared driveway pickup in Scottsdale.
The trained team works to recover the vehicle without damage to surrounding property, and they will tell you on arrival if conditions differ from what was described. If your building requires permission or notice before a tow truck enters, please confirm that in advance. You need to be authorized to arrange removal from the space where the vehicle is parked.
Does a vehicle that will not move get a lower offer?
Not automatically. Whether a vehicle rolls is mostly a collection question, not a value question. Seized brakes or flat tires change how the team recovers it, but the offer is still based on what the vehicle is: its parts, completeness, condition, weight and the current market. A long-parked vehicle that is complete may be worth more than a newer one that has been stripped. How cash offers are assessed.
Time in storage can affect condition in other ways. Rust, rodent damage to wiring, water inside the cabin or a seized engine are all things to mention if you know about them. You do not need to inspect the vehicle closely or open anything up. Share what you have noticed, and Jay will build that into the offer before booking. Once agreed, that offer is firm, and the extra planning that goes into a recovery is not charged on top. Standard towing remains included for complete vehicles we purchase.
How is this different from a standard scrap pickup?
The offer, the paperwork and the firm agreement work the same way as any other vehicle we buy. The difference is the preparation. Junk car removal is about the vehicles that have stopped moving and the extra planning they need. If your vehicle rolls freely and sits in an open driveway, the Scrap Car Removal page describes the simpler process. Standard scrap car pickup.
